De même que l'artiste ne crée pas de façon continue, mais lors de rares moments d'inspiration, l'Histoire, selon Zweig, procède par bonds : une succession de faits banals est interrompue de loin en loin par des événements clés. Ce sont ces moments « d'une grande concentration dramatique, porteurs de destin, où une décision capitale se condense en un seul jour, une seule heure et souvent une seule minute », que Zweig a voulu illustrer à travers ces douze récits.
Il y narre, et commente à sa manière, des événements aussi divers que la prise de Byzance, la quête de l'Eldorado, la bataille de Waterloo, l'expédition du capitaine Scott au pôle Sud, la pose de la première ligne télégraphique sous l'océan Atlantique, les derniers mois de la vie de Haendel et la genèse du Messie, ou la composition de La Marseillaise par Rouget de Lisle. En 1939 avait paru, sous le titre Les Heures étoilées de l'humanité, une première édition du recueil de Stefan Zweig.
Aux neuf textes traduits à l'époque viennent aujourd'hui s'ajouter trois textes inédits en français, ainsi que la préface originale de l'auteur. Les Très Riches Heures de l'humanité constituent la première édition française intégrale de Sternstunden der Menschheit.

Pour essayer de la comprendre, et peut-être de lui pardonner, celui-ci va tenter de retracer son parcours. En parallèle, à travers le journal intime de sa mère, l'écrivain nous fait entrer dans l'intimité de celle-ci. Internée en 1966 dans un asile de Lausanne, Marie-Blanche se souvient de sa vie, commencée comme un conte de fées mais qui prit peu à peu des allures de tragédie.
Jim Fergus s'inspire ici de son histoire personnelle pour nous offrir une saga familiale bouleversante. A la façon de Dalva, de Jim Harrison, il inscrit l'intime dans l'Histoire et nous présente d'inoubliables portraits de femmes dans la tourmente. On retrouve surtout dans cette fresque qui s'étend sur un siècle et trois continents toute la puissance romanesque de l'auteur de Mille femmes blanches associée à une force d'émotion rare.
Marie-Blanche est le troisième roman de Jim Fergus, après Mille femmes blanches (Le Cherche Midi, 2000), vendu à près de 400 000 exemplaires en France, et La Fille sauvage (Le Cherche Midi, 2004). Jim Fergus a consacré cinq années à l'écriture de ce roman, qui est publié en France en exclusivité mondiale.
